Editor in Chief

The Fuller Project seeks a dynamic and experienced newsroom leader to serve as Editor in Chief (EIC), to lead our newsroom in producing ambitious reporting on issues viewed through a gender lens to improve equity and representation in news coverage. 

Our ideal candidate will have a proven track record of high-impact journalism and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams to thoughtfully cover groups that are underrepresented in news. You will shape and lead our journalistic vision and strategy, develop our growing staff of reporters and editors, and shepherd partnerships with some of the world’s top publications.

The Fuller Project is the global nonprofit newsroom dedicated to groundbreaking investigative and enterprise reporting about women. Since 2015, our team has published hundreds of articles that center women’s voices in our reporting, and our journalism and impact communications have been honored with 17 industry awards or citations. Our digital news model is rooted in local reporting and collaboration, including formal editorial partnerships with six newsrooms and counting, and many more collaborations around the world.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

As EIC, you will own, oversee and implement The Fuller Project’s editorial vision and strategy that builds on our strategic plan. Reporting to the CEO and with a close working relationship with a Board-level Editorial Committee, you will uphold and advance our mission and values, be a creative team player, and will have or be able to quickly build expertise in gender equality and issues that impact women. 

Building on our strong track record, you will bring fresh energy and an entrepreneurial spirit to our newsroom. You will lead our digital news strategy, newsletter strategy, partnerships, and the enterprise and investigative reporting we are known for. 

You will take pride in building a thriving editorial team, drawing on a proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging. You will foster a culture of mutual respect and trust, transparency, shared purpose, and clear communication.

With clarity and collaborative spirit, you will oversee and lead partnerships with a variety of U.S.-based and global outlets as well as bring demonstrated strength in leveraging cross-functional teams in a news organization to best facilitate impact journalism and help drive the entire organization forward. 

As an editor and journalist who upholds the highest standards of unbiased, non-partisan, rigorous journalism, you will bring your deep experience in editing enterprise reporting and investigations to bear on our work and take it to the next level.

Core competencies include strong digital news and U.S. and global enterprise and investigative editing experience, writing, editing, organization; excellent management, leadership, and interpersonal communication; the ability to deploy and leverage resources effectively; and a vision for and demonstrated commitment to meaningfully cover underrepresented issues and groups.

As Fuller Project Editor in Chief, you will:

1. Develop, articulate and implement the editorial vision for the newsroom. Deepen our focus on stories that are reported by journalists who have been on the ground long before a story breaks, who have expertise and long-term commitment to stories, and who shape their enterprise reporting based on their source networks, and not on policy frameworks or conversations among power holders far away. Advance an editorial vision of local news with global relevance that disrupts and advances the way that U.S. and global reporting is often done, bringing readers nuanced, complex, reporting about women that shows the intersection between issues such as economic insecurity, systemic injustice, climate change, health, violence, childcare and more. Continually push The Fuller Project to do better, more thoughtful and revealing work that disrupts bias in traditional news and that brings value to our partners. Bring this news to life for our readers, listeners and viewers through a compelling digital-first strategy that you will develop drawing on a keen sense of our current and potential audience and ability to spur impact. 

2. Supervise our newsroom. Oversee our team of editors, ensuring ethical and journalistic standards, as well as sensitivity, safety, and other protocols that protect our team and the people we report on. Share in organizational leadership initiatives to reinforce and build diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging in all our practices inside the newsroom and in the way we approach our journalism. Bring an entrepreneurial approach to expanding our team and our reporting impact. Attract, retain, train and motivate the talented reporters who join our team as we grow. 

3. Oversee bold, ambitious reporting projects. Lead on all our editorial efforts, taking into account shifting media trends and ways to maximize our contribution to global, national, and local press. Harness our team and partners to bring relevant multimedia to digital investigative, feature, and solutions-focused stories to diverse audiences through engaging reporting. Bring high level experience with sensitive and high-stakes stories. Have sharp story sense, a laser focus on impact, and a deep understanding of the U.S. and global media landscape. 

4. Pioneer innovative and high-impact partnerships. Support partner newsrooms in multiple regions in the U.S. and the world.  Develop and execute on bespoke partnership models that best fit the stories and partner outlets, including co-bylining, co-editing, resource sharing, reporter embeds, syndication, and more. Select partners with an eye to our strategic goals. Bring The Fuller Project’s gender expertise and record of impact and accountability to partner newsrooms around the world, and embrace partners’ contributions to our editorial work and newsgathering. Collaborate with and leverage our cross-functional team members to measure impact. 

5. Engage effectively with our audiences. Drawing on a track record of working with or managing high-level teams that develop audience, product and platforms, work with cross-functional team members to grow our audience with a focus on impact. Draw on best thinking and practices in nonprofit newsrooms, staying abreast of trends. Develop a strong voice, communicating authentically with the public in traditional forums and on social media.  Represent The Fuller Project across the industry and more widely. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Our ideal EIC candidate will have a keen interest in journalism that addresses the gaps in news coverage about underrepresented groups and that has the potential to spur impact. You will have a successful record of recruiting and retaining talent in the newsroom and managing, mentoring, and providing professional growth opportunities. You bring significant experience reporting on issues critical to The Fuller Project, a record of newsroom leadership, and a demonstrated record of high-quality journalism.

In addition, we are seeking the following qualifications:

  • 5-10+ years of experience effectively leading teams of reporters and editors.
  • 5+ years of enterprise or investigative editing experience, US and global preferred.
  • Experience interfacing with cross-functional departments in a news organization. Nonprofit and digital news experience preferred.
  • Ability to support and nurture a culture of inclusion and comfort with a growth environment.
  • A high level of professionalism, maturity and accountability.
  • Passion for and commitment to the mission and core values of The Fuller Project.
  • An effective and passionate communicator with strong interpersonal skills and an authentic ability to connect with the team and a highly diverse group of external stakeholders.

Our reporters are based in the places where they report, and this position is remote. Some travel (10-20% approximately) and in-office or in-person presence required, including to provide leadership in the cities where The Fuller Project has its leadership hub (DC) and editorial staff.
